Emchap's Shit from the Internet 08/3/22 🍠
My toxic trait is that I am forever freezing leftovers on the assumption that I will eat them during a week I don’t want to cook, despite ample evidence that I will not. However, there is one exception: pizza, which freezes quite well and for which I have over many years mastered the reheating process. My boyfriend makes fun of me for doing this, but he is also planning to eat 3 pounds of chicken in as many days this week, so who can say which of us is ultimately weirder here.
All of that is to say that now that the heat wave is broken, pizza finally seems appetizing again, and I broke out a few pieces as my post-house-cleaning Wednesday night treat. (This did make me homesick for my previous Wednesday night culinary tradition of a veggie burrito, diet coke, and jamaica from the taco place on the corner by my house in LA. Miss u, Taqueria El Zarape.) Worn out as I was after cleaning the whole house—Wednesday being the day I force myself to vacuum and take out the many cardboard boxes which I manage to accumulate during the week—pizza was a perfectly satisfying 8:30 pm dinner.
The boxes had at least contained interesting things (light boxes for my office so I look less like a gremlin shooting videos for work, gifts from a beloved friend, new linen garments from Old Navy), but one of them was a 40 pound bag of cat litter from Chewy, and I got to be humbled by the difference between how easy it was for me to heft the box containing the bag (quite!) and how hard it was for me to heft the actual formless bag (very hard!). But I was able to move it, even if it took me a while to figure out the grip, and I got to be quietly pleased by the degree of function in my functional fitness routine. (Say what you will about deadlifts, a trash lift that I hate, but it’s hard to argue with the utility of being able to pick shit off the ground.)
The nighttime is actually cool again, and I’m wiggling my toes in the breeze coming through the windows, and I might take a bath later. Things are better than they could be.
Shit to read
As someone who loves the grocery store (though mine is, shamefully, a Whole Foods), I enjoyed this piece on little trips to the grocery store.
And this, on why swimsuits are a bit of a con. (I will say, though, that the Land’s End tugless tanks do solve for many of these issues, except for the peeing ones.)
The conclusion I took from this is that we don’t fucking know what the medieval peasants were up to.
What a completely, phenomenally beautiful apartment.
Really enjoyed (was made sad by) this piece about how visible poverty is interpreted as unsafe by people who are made sad or anxious or angry by it. Being in Portland I am truly driven insane by how frequently people conflate “the root problem” and “the people who are victims of that problem”.
Loved this piece on HyperCard.
Shit to eat
Take some leftover pizza. It can be frozen, or not. If it’s not, do less of the next step.
Put it into a cold cast iron pan.
Sprinkle a little water in the pan (a few flicks from your fingertips, just enough to make a little steam).
Put a lid on the pan.
Turn the stove to a medium-low.
Set a timer for 10 minutes, and check the pizza. Depending on your pan and the slices, they may need to go for a little more time. Only do a minute at the time; it will burn more quickly than you think.
Shit to watch
You know it’s soothing ASMR content time.
Shit to buy
A little spritz bottle for your skin items, so you can just spray a fine mist instead of trying to figure out how the fuck you’re meant to apply lotion p50.
