Emchap's Shit from the Internet 06/23/21 🍠
I have spent the last few weeks trying to figure out how to move all of my non-furniture items across the country. (The furniture, by and large, is being let free.) This would be a much less difficult-to-solve issue if I still drove, but I haven’t operated a motor vehicle since 2015 and a moving truck full of all of my shit seems like a bad time to pick that hobby back up.
I’m down to three options:
A Pod. This would be $2,681, and would require figuring out how to store it on my property (uncertain) and a permit for delivery (annoying). Also, I would have to hire movers on both ends to load and unload my stuff.
A local mover, who moved my stuff here from my last apartment. He quoted me an estimate of $2,865, but has been super delayed in responding to me and also is 100% not licensed for anything. Would probably be fine, but if it wasn’t, I’d be hosed.
Two Men and a Truck. They’ve quoted me $3,760 to pick up all my shit, put it in crates, move it, and move it in. I wouldn’t have to deal with storing a pod, and it’d be a single (licensed, insured) national chain. But they’ve quoted me two different rates, and I’d be happy to pay the higher one if I knew why (possibly estimated weight?) but they’ve been not very good at explaining it. Also, they’re not, like, mega-responsive—I have to call them multiple times to get a response.
I’m overwhelmed with the idea of having to find movers on either end, and would be willing to take the hit on cost if Two Men and a Truck would just clarify the rate variance. And I’m somewhat tempted by the local option, since they didn’t steal my shit last time and I don’t have any reason to believe that they would this time. But, my last long distance move was a total nightmare and I’m worried about not having someone to call that I can yell at.
This is first-world problem territory but nonetheless it is my problem, so for once in the history of this newsletter I am asking for suggestions from the crowd. Which option would you go with?

I hope she’s able to end the conservatorship.
Just a cool thing to think about as I sit in my room with my window unit.
Choire’s Sicha’s newsletter upon leaving the NYT style section made me laugh.
Here for all Peloton-as-cultural-juggernaut analysis.
Bananas (and sad) story about a woman who survived falling out of a plane that came apart.
As someone who is often tremendously annoyed by my local paper, I appreciated this.
A great and sad piece about a juvenile offender who is locked up for life because of the intersection of untreated mental illness and guns.
Shit to eat
Make or buy your favorite pizza dough recipe.
While that’s going on, cook up half a chopped onion and some spinach that’s on its way out in your fridge.
Find some tomato sauce, or blitz up some tomatoes and garlic and parsley and salt.
Shred a hunk of mozz. Portion it with your heart.
Spread your pizza dough out on a cornmeal-covered silpat.
Toss mozz, then toppings, then a little sauce, then more mozz.
Fold in half, pinch shut, slice slits in the top.
Cover in melted butter for fun.
Into the oven at 425 for 20 minutes.
Enjoy.

I enjoy this woman’s DIY videos.
