Emchap's Shit from the Internet 02/24/21 🍠
It has started to become a little warmer in LA this week (not tremendously or anything, low 70s) and for whatever reason it has hit me badly; I feel sluggish and sleepy and slow. Part of this no doubt is that my house retains heat in a weird way, so when I’m done with work for the day I’m confronted with a 10 degree warmer room in which to go amuse myself and make dinner. But regardless of its origins it feels like I could sleep for a week.
(I have no reason to suspect I’m actually sick; my lymph nodes are fine and my temperature is where you’d expect, I think I’m just a sensitive little indoor gremlin, upset about temperature changes in the way you’d normally expect from an orchid.)
I have nothing very interesting to say this week, other than that I’m very tired of the pandemic and wish it were done happening, but I don’t know that that’s really news to anyone. Fingers crossed others are having better weeks than me, and congrats to my former colleagues who finished out their vest this week; take the Australian money and do interesting things with it.
Shit to read
I read this list of all the memes in Patricia Lockwood’s new book to tide me over until the book (which is, so far, excellent) arrived.
One of the things that is obvious to some people I know and less obvious to others is that modern web apps are a tangle of subvendors making up the product you use, and this was an interesting (and for insider baseball-y reasons, particularly so) view of what happens when that goes badly.
Steve Way talking about the ways in which the government is so incredibly shitty to disabled people was very good.
This story about a tiny awful dog and the ways in which we fail animals made me weep.
I will obviously read every single “hey how did the dinosaurs finale… happen?” piece god sees fit to give me.
Though I don’t entirely agree with Geivnson’s interpretation of the documentary’s fundamental argument (which I think is less about Britney Spears’ original sexual agency than it is about her competence + the breakdown mostly just being a very reasonable response to circumstances) I thought this piece about how those narratives impacted her really compelling.
As someone who has subscribed to the “bubbles are fake” school since this started, there was a teensy little bit of schadenfreude here.
Shit to eat
Buy some popcorn kernels.
Forget to eat dinner until 8:30 pm.
Heat up oil in a pan, and drop three kernels in.
Put the lid on, obviously.
When the three kernels pop, pour in three tablespoons more.
Lid back on.
Once the kernels have stopped or slowed down significantly, take it off the heat.
Dump into a big bowl.
Cover with pizza seasoning, or cheese, or salt and pepper, or anything else.
Enjoy.
Shit to listen to
So like Florida Georgia Line is (as my friend said on Twitter) frat rock and at least one of the dudes in the band is a piece of shit, but like this is where we’re at.
Shit to buy
This stylish stovetop espresso maker.
I’m obsessed with these coffee cups.
And these are lovely.
