Emchap's Shit from the Internet 01/6/21 đ
Well, I was going to write an essay about how weird it is to change jobs if you both work and are onboarding remotely, since it means you leave one job and just⊠come back to the same desk logged in to a different Slack, which feels not like a real transition, but then a coup happened so you know. Here we are. The 25th amendment is trending on twitter.
I unintentionally broke the news to my boss, who has I think been very heads-down in work (basically 80% of my team is new, so sheâs busy) by asking if she wanted to move our 1 on 1âshe asked if everything was okay, and I got to have the very weird experience of being like âno Iâm fine but also there is an armed mob in the capitolâ. (We moved it to tomorrow.)
My dadâs girlfriendâs Christmas gift for me arrived, and it was a very sweet tortilla press, and that is a small bright spot.
Shit to read
I will be real with you that I read almost nothing this last week except for getting to center, because the greatest joy of being between jobs is staying the fuck off the internet. But I have a few things.
Getting Things Done was instrumental to some of my early understanding of how to process tasks in high school, and Merlin Mann is 100% the reason I started working in tech (not in an inspirational way, in a âMailchimp bought an ad on Back to Work in 2012 that I listened to, I thought âhey they seem cool I wonder if theyâd hire meâ, and it turned out they were located in my hometownâ way), and I thought the first half of this piece was a really interesting review of that particular era of tech. (A lot of GTD stuff is very similar to Bullet Journal stuff, IMO.) I donât agree with the takeaways, but whatâs new.
Friends and I are looking at starting a commune again, the greatest millennial hobby.
Shit to eat
Buy carrots, cut the tops off, submerge them in a bowl of water, and fully forget about them in your fridge for a month? Six weeks? Too long.
Theyâll still be good. They appear to keep forever.
Take them out and peel them and chop them up.
Separately, chop up a small onion.
And half a sweet potato.
In a pot, heat up some butter or coconut oil, and add your onion. Stir it for five minutes.
Add to it two big globs of red thai curry paste, and stir everything together for another minute.
On top of that, add your chopped up sweet potato, and wait a few minutes.
Then your carrots.
Then cover with a few cups of broth, bring to a boil, pop the lid on, and cook for 30 minutes.
When youâre done, immersion blend that sucker. You will splatter yourself with hot soup. Itâs fine.
Dump in half a container of coconut milk. Stir it up to incorporate.
Taste, re-season, and serve with cilantro and some toast.
(From the Budget Bytes Thai Coconut Curry Carrot Soup, which is great.)
Shit to buy
I donât think anyone needs to buy this but I personally just purchased a magic trackpad and Iâm super excited to be free of my horrible Apple mouse.
My pals are currently collecting sleeping bags, blankets, etc. for our unhoused neighbors. As easy as it is to make fun of LA for not getting cold it is down into the 40s and 50s here at night and it is dangerous for folks sleeping outside. The city has failed its homeless residents so completely; if you have some extra cash on hand please purchase those items of the linked wishlist.
