Emchap's Shit from the Internet 11/8/17 🍠
I am now officially #funemployed! To kick it off, I went to this year's Bullish Conference, where I spoke on Tools, Systems, and Processes and only said "fuck" during my presentation, like, twice.
The conference was, as always, energizing, and I got to see both college friends and two really profoundly lovely former coworkers (who politely fought over who was buying my dinner! I felt very popular), one of whom asked me to tell his boss that he had eaten scallops with me just so he could beat said boss to the punch.
(I did not, but I did have some fantastic friend oysters and ate scallops the night before with a different friend just to irritate the both of them.)
I've got the rest of the week to revel in taking the 10:30am workout classes at my gym (so much space!) and reading copies of Real Simple that I stole off the free table in my apartment building before I'm off to San Diego for a week to visit several of my absolute favorite people/just a fuckload of sea lions, and then back to New York for a weekend, and then I'll be off to Atlanta for Thanksgiving. Then, back and on to the new gig!
This seemed like much more free time before I booked it all! But I am very, very excited to travel and to see people and to practice floor presses in a space where no one is on the mat next to me. A friend has been keeping me abreast of his IoT-enabled attempts to catch the yeti and/or bat that's living in his basement. I ate two pancake sandwiches today, and chased it with a whole article about tablescapes and Chris Evans and Jenny Slate might be back together. It was great and there are absolutely worse ways to spend time.
Shit to read
I don't super love this article on modest fashion but it quotes two of my favorite internet people (Tavi and Aminatou Sow) so it is worth it for that alone.
"Spoopy" is my favorite stupid holiday thing and this article about how it came to be is a fun post-Halloween chaser.
I started my career in customer support, and this exploration of the access support agents have was a fun reminder that lots of folks don't know that! Of course it varies by company (and the ability to delist an account absolutely should rest with compliance folks only, there's no reason in the world support should have access), but in lots of places support agents can do lots of things!
This exploration of a woman I'd never heard of who was America's first celebrity dieter is lovely and kind and completely new to me.
If you didn't read this look at a girl genius who grew up in rough circumstances you super should. It's long and good and sad.
Margaret Trudeau was unknown to me until today and you should read about her.
Australia loves Abba, because of course they do.
Shit to eat
Get you two pieces of bread, some mayo, whatever sautéed-up veggies you have kicking (I did zucchini and caramelized onions), some herbs (I did basil), and cheese (I did pre-sliced cheddar), along with half an avocado if you're living your #truth.
Heat a pan.
Put mayo on one side of each of the bread slices.
Drop one slice into the pan mayo side down.
Onto it put: a slice of cheese, as much of the sautéed veg as will fit, a layer of herbs, a layer of avocado slice, and another slice of cheese.
Top it with the second slice of bread, mayo side up.
Press down with a spatula and make sure the bottom cheese is melty before flipping.
Cook the other side until it's crispy (like two minutes?).
Plate that sucker and cut it in half; it's fall.
Shit to listen to
I listened to the host of Oh My Dollar at that conference, and she was a delight, so go listen to her podcast and get your money figured out.
Shit to buy
I bought this dress and this one from eShakti before they went on sale (got them customized to above-the-knee length and my measurements) and they haven't arrived yet but I am SUPER excited to look like a slightly-scary space captain. The whole site's got a sale going right now, so, if you've ever wanted to try their stuff now is a good time.
Two different people sent me UrbanStems flowers last week and they were great; I recommend them heartily.
I have been using this expensive face oil as a day and night moisturizer and I feel v. glam and a friend commented on how glowing I was today so.
The Fenty foundation is in fact super excellent, go get some if you're near a Sephora.
