Emchap's Shit from the Internet 09/25/19 🍠
This is my last of these being written before I leave Atlanta, which has been a lovely and somewhat completely exhausting trip. It's good to know I can form an adult relationship with Atlanta if I need to, but my mood has gone all weird and I'm tired and I miss my cat.
Part of why I am no doubt feeling so weird is that I am broken out and cranky in the way that you can only be if you are eating out every night of the week and also menstruating, and it is with that in mind that I present to you a review of Atlanta-area restaurants I have been to in my time here:
Kitchen Six: Excellent, cheaper than you expect, and charmingly staffed by a waiter who used to be a waiter at a different place where you used to spend all your time and money.
Poor Hendrix: Very good but also populated by every person who grooms themselves like they work in politics.
Kavarna: Excellent coffee and company and good dogs.
Vietvana: Giant quantities of food served by slightly too few people. Very busy. Excellent.
Joystick: Mostly notable as the only bar where a man has ever gotten mad at me for speaking to him because it interrupted his Mortal Kombat game. That's not germane to my experience on this trip, it's just a true thing that happened that I think about a lot.
Beer Garden: Much better when not in it with a surly man who refuses to talk to you.
Petit Chou: Good food, served too the fuck close to an ex boyfriend.
Brother Moto: See above, but also sort of charmingly full of motorcycles and motorcycle-related swag.
El Tesoro: Atlanta finally got Mexican that doesn't make me sad! Charmingly full of people I know, which is a sentence I thought I'd never say about Atlanta!
Alma Cocina: See above, but at a much higher price point!
Yacht Club: When I die just toss my body in the back. This place is the best.
El Myr: Also very good but with more cocaine sort of ambiently present.
Joe's EAV: Still the very best at what it is.
Mellow Mushroom: Food still good and waiters still stoned.
Redbird: Possibly the best meal I've had all year right up until the weather took out all the lights on the street and I had possibly the most terrifying Lyft ride home of my life, which was An Experience.
Manuel's Tavern: Comfortingly identical to the way it has always been.
Thinking Man's Tavern: Mounds! Of! Rounds!
Hop City Westside: Like the other one, but in a basement!
Wild Heaven Westside: Like the other one, but apparently adjacent to a goddamn swamp based on the mosquito population!
Fox Bros: The brisket literally melted in my mouth, I fuck with it entirely.
Shit to read
My industry is so fucking dumb.
Untitled! Goose! Game! HONK.
This, about Lizzo, is tremendous and made me cry.
A fascinating intersection of public records and personal privacy. (Also NYC just has a spooky grave island?)
More stories about nightmarish plane crash causes!
As someone who lives alone, this fucked me up.
Adam Conover seems good.
Johnny and Moira are the only reasonable relationship goals.
Loved this essay on race and Oklahoma (the musical). God, that production was so good.
This are beautiful portraits of Nigerian brides.
I loved this interview with Joan Baez about Woodstock.
Shit to eat
Normally I do this big fake recipe but honestly go get the garlic shrimp at Redbird, I'm so full and tired and meant to write the newsletter earlier and I've made hardly anything this week except for breakfast burritos.
Breakfast burrito recipe: scramble an egg half-heartedly and put it on a burrito tortilla. Put on shredded cheese, spinach, sliced up peppers, and half a mashed up avocado.
Roll everything up tightly and pray you haven't fucked it up.
If you're a coward, eat it this way. If you like good food, pop the thing on the griddle until all sides are browned, the way god intended.
Shit to listen to
Look Spotify knows I like wispy angry girl songs and this is no exception.
Shoutout to this song which dunks on Marietta, a suburb that is bad, and a man who makes "sweet, halfhearted gesture[s]" and fuck if that isn't a mood.
Shit to buy
I just made a noise about these shoes.
